Gallery Spotlight: Michael Rosenthal Gallery

Upcoming Exhibit
Lapidary Terrarium Mary Conrad
November 07 - December 12, 2009
Reception: November 7th, 4pm – 9pm

Michael Rosenthal is pleased to present Lapidary Terrarium, Mary Conrad’s San Francisco debut exhibition of installation works, paintings, and drawings. In this show, Conrad explores the concept of Lapidary Terrarium as the specialized and expertly crafted social and environmental spaces in which we enclose ourselves. Acting as an anthropologist, Conrad mediates a banal and strange world to examine the historical and social impacts on our shared consciousness of language, signs, currency and packaging. Sharing the same title as the exhibition, the large installation in the center of the gallery looms gallantly over and illuminates everyday objects and materials to suggest that there are other uses and meanings behind the mundane. Conrad takes a truly interdisciplinary approach to her art making that mirrors her academic background in literature and architecture, yielding results of poetic prowess.

“How do you select the artists you represent. What do you look for?” It’s the first question we’re asked by artists – and by new collectors --- when they visit our gallery or stop by our booth at one of the International Fairs.

Our submission process is simple: artist statement, CV and a dozen or so images of recent work. But our criteria for selecting the artists we choose to represent is often perplexing to some of the artists we meet.

“We represent art that we love.” we state simply.

Sometimes an emerging artist may ask, “What does that mean?

Art is a three way dialogue between the artist, the art and the viewer. It is an intimate and private experience. So we look for art that touches us, moves us, transforms us. Of course, our selection criteria is based on over 30 years of viewing art at major museums and galleries around the world, years of educating our eyes to old and modern masters. Ultimately our decision is based on a visceral connection between us and the artwork.

The Blogo Project

The Blago Project
By Kelly Conston 09/29/09

With a political past as entertaining and tragic as we’ve ever seen and with hair that is the envy of Elvis impersonators and hair challenged men everywhere, the former governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich, has made his mark on the art world. Recognizing that Blagojevich’s mane is representative of a possible new art movement, “Hair Nouveau”, and that his political behavior warrants some comic relief, a Chicago community art organization, Ravenswood Artwalk (RAW), has borrowed his name for their art exhibit this year. Their huge two-day Fall event, entitled “The Blago Project”, will take place from October 3rd through the 4th at none other than the wiretapped offices of “Friends of Blagojevich”. The purpose of the exhibit this year is to enhance open commentary of the alleged corruption and salacious rumor, accusation and innuendo that has been hiding in the Ravenswood Corridor since Rod Blagojevich’s scandalous political antics a year ago.
